At its best, air suspension provides something traditional springs cannot easily replicate: the ability to combine a controlled, comfortable ride with precise handling while adjusting the vehicle’s ride height and suspension characteristics as conditions change.
It’s one of the reasons a luxury European SUV can glide over rough roads while remaining remarkably composed through corners.
But air suspension is also more complex than a conventional spring-and-shock setup.

The vehicle sits slightly lower on one side.
The compressor seems to run longer than it used to.
The suspension warning appears intermittently.

An air suspension system generally relies on air springs or air struts, a compressor, valves, lines, height sensors, and electronic controls. Depending on the vehicle, there may also be a reservoir and additional components responsible for managing pressure.
Every part has a role.
A small air leak can therefore create a surprisingly large chain reaction.
Imagine one corner of the vehicle slowly losing air overnight. The control system detects that the ride height has dropped and activates the compressor to restore it.
The vehicle appears normal again.
The owner drives away without thinking much about it.
But the compressor has just worked harder than it should have.
If the leak continues, the compressor may operate repeatedly to compensate. Over time, that additional workload can shorten compressor life.
What started as a relatively small air leak can eventually become a much more expensive repair.

Another warning sign is unusual compressor behaviour.
A compressor that runs frequently, runs for extended periods, or becomes noticeably louder than before deserves attention.
A suspension system should maintain ride height without constantly fighting a leak.
Changes in ride quality can also provide clues.
The vehicle may feel unusually harsh, bouncy, or unstable. Ride height may change unexpectedly. In some cases, the vehicle may enter a restricted or emergency suspension mode.
Electronic faults can complicate diagnosis further.
A height sensor may report incorrect information. A valve block may fail to control pressure correctly. A wiring problem can prevent the control module from communicating with another component.
This is why replacing an air spring simply because the vehicle is sitting low can be the wrong approach.
The low ride height may be the result of a leak, a valve problem, a sensor issue, or another failure elsewhere in the system.
